For some reason, all of the plastic kit makers only produced F8U-2NE (F-8E) and F-8J kits in 1/72 scale. Converting one of them to the earlier variants wasn't easy because of the significant difference in the radome and for the F-8C, the windscreen. Muroc Models released conversion sets for the A and C but these are rarely available.
CAT 4 is now preparing a resin/3D-printed conversion for the Academy range of 1/72 scale Crusaders to be available in October.
Note that there are two windscreens, one with the IR seeker (D) and one without (C).
The F8U subject matter expert, Tom Weinel (aka Superheat), would have approved of their selection of the Academy kit as a basis. See his review including its shortcomings HERE (for the home page of this blog that I created on his behalf, click HERE).
This conversion set also allows a modeler to create an F-8A or F-8B since the shape of the B/C/D radome is the same as that of the F-8A nose cone. The other changes to an E kit mainly amount to taking stuff off although there may be other modifications and substitutions required like the ejection seat. Click HERE.
